Absolute state-of-the-art in every detail. That describes the new VIPER from Bob's Boatyard. Designed to replace both the LOGIC and ORBIT designs, this yacht combines the best features of both. It is capable of carrying a bit more ballast than the ORBIT if desired, but provides a longer waterline than the LOGIC at the lighter displacements common today. It has ORBIT's fast, fine forward sections, combined with a fuller stern to move the ballast and rig aft to allow more power to be carried offwind. The kit itself has been completely revised from our earlier yachts. The hull is still Kevlar, but is now a three layer laminate instead of two, allowing the lighter fabrics to be better oriented to maximize the stiffness to weight ratio, and uses Vinyl-ester Resin to improve impact strength. It is teamed with a vacuum-bagged Carbon Fiber fin, which has an improved airfoil for better acceleration out of the tacks. The new, thin rudder is also vacuum-bagged, and sports a Carbon Fiber post. Vacuum-bagging these parts allows a much-improved strength to weight ratio. The fin, for example, is 25% lighter and 50% stiffer both in bend and twist. Masts are now keel-stepped instead of deck-stepped, which turns every puff into more power due to better, more consistent control over the rig. The mast and fin now plug into a one-piece, Carbon Fiber trunk assembly, which greatly simplifies building the yacht. The ballast has been redesigned, utilizing a laminar flow shape that has proven significantly faster in light winds. Even the Silicone bumper is lighter, now foam filled. The entire kit, less lead, weighs under 16 ounces, 25% lighter than a LOGIC!
