Sail Battens

by Dave Acree

Looking for easy, quick batten design for your sails? Something which will not cost you a lot of time and still do the job? Here is a batten design which maybe the one for you. The first thing to obtain is .005 inch thick (use what ever thickness suites you), 1/4 inch wide Styrene. Too thick Styrene will not bend with the sail nor too thin Styrene won't have any straightness at all.

To attach the Styrene strip on to the sail, use clear Silicone Sealer. Make sure the surface of the sail's leech area where the battens will be is clean. This also includes the battens themselves.

Next apply a thin coat of Silicone Sealer to both the sail area and to the batten. Place the batten on the sail and press the batten down and carefully clean the excess sealer off with a paper towel. When done, check the battens from time to time to make sure they are stuck to the sail.

Note, be sure to round one end of the battens which point into the center of the sail. Also flush the batten's end to the leech when applying. Last, don't forget to check the rules for your boat before you apply the battens!

I have done this to two 36/600 sails without any problems and it has worked for me.
